It was an extremely memorable Easter weekend for a host of children - many of whom were from underprivileged areas - who were treated to a day of fun in the sun and surf of Ballito when they took part in the Mr Price/KDM Learn to Surf Programme presented by the KwaDukuza Municipality.
The empowering programme took place at Willard beach from April 6-9, with youngsters getting the opportunity to try their hand at surfing – the majority doing so for the first time.
Under the watchful gaze of the KwaDukuza Muncipality Lifeguard team, and instructor Bongani Xulu, the participants were taken out into the ocean and given some practical surfing lessons.
Xulu, who is certainly an inspirational role-model after losing his leg in a car accident in 2003, said surf instructing was a rewarding way to give back to the community.
“This is what it's all about. It's really great as an instructor to see the people you've taught stand up on a board for the first time. It's the first experience that counts, and so we are focused on ensuring it's an enjoyable experience. We have the right boards to make things a little easier and we keep a close eye on them throughout the time they're in the water. Credit must go to Mr Price and the Kwadukuza Municapility because this a fantastic joint venture and a dream come true for us and many of the kids."
The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children who participated, with such an opportunity certainly not an every-day occurrence.
